We have four kids, the oldest being 4 yo, so sound machines are common in my house. Here's how I'd rank the ones we use currently:
1. The Sharper Image EC-B100 Sound Soother Alarm Clock (~$40). PROS: 20 sounds, by far the best for lows (bass sounds), AC power. CONS: Big, expensive.
2. White Noise app for iPhone/iPod (Free for Lite version). PROS: Sounds OK, cheap. CONS: Only 10 sounds, need smartphone, needs to be charged or plugged in.
3. Sleep Aid app for iPhone/iPod ($0.99). PROS: Sounds OK, cheap. CONS: Only a few sounds, need smartphone, needs to be charged or plugged in.
4. Conair (~$20). PROS: Good value, compact unit, AC power. CONS: Sounds fair compared with apps, terrible when compared with Sharper Image, only 10 sounds.
