This alarm clock is the real deal. The honest-to-goodness tick-tock is great white noise, and there's something just innately satisfying about *winding* a real clock! I'm no luddite (I find that an iphone is a pretty darn handy thing to carry around), but I've grown tired of how it seems *everything* around us seems to have a zillion electronic features competing for our attention.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this 5 stars is that it comes up a bit short in execution. You can expect it to work just fine for a while, but my experience is that you shouldn't expect heirloom quality for your $10 investment. I'm on at least my third generation of this clock, and I find that they typically last maybe two years before the winding mechanism starts to get wonky. Eventually, you can expect it to start stopping randomly (yes it's irritating), and you'll presumably have to replace it.
I think a clock should last longer, but I figure for $10 you get what you...Read more

I am very pleased with this clock - both the price & the clock itself. It was a gift for a 96 yr.old gentleman who now has trouble hearing .He has no trouble hearing it at all . It arrived in great condition & was pretty well packed for shipping.

The clock is truly mechanical -- one reason why I bought it in the first place. You have to wind it up every day and you have to wind the alarm as well, every day. If you don't you will get a free long lay next day and it will be your fault. The alarm is nice and loud and you stop it with a little (mechanical) blocker. I am not bothered by the loud ticking, as it relaxes me. If you are sensitive about this, I suggest you go for one of those digital items. This clock offers you straight mechanics -- a celebration of simplicity paired with elegance and on top of it a great shiny, golden look.
The only problem with the clock is that it is a bit rushed. After a full wind-up, I have a 23,5 day because the clock somehow runs a bit faster than it should. This varies roughly between 15 and 25 minutes each day. This is annoying as I have then also to correct the clock every day. For this nuisance I downgrade the rating to 3 points, otherwise I would simply love it.
