Beep is electronic, but is progressive (gets louder and more insistent every 10 seconds or so) and begins relatively softly for a beeper. Made in China but is quite well put-together. This is a heavy, solid clock. I've owned 3 in the past 10 years and have only replaced because I've broken them through my own negligence (tipped out upper-floor window etc). Battery is easy to replace with a small hinged door. Clock sits very stably, not easy to knock over. Numbers are very easy to read, alarm-hand easy to set with a knob in back. Black dial is not illuminated.
Happy to say that the Salton takeover of Westclox a while back does not seem to have impacted the production of this Big Ben model, at least. The only detail that has changed has been the alarm knob on top -- it's now spring-loaded rather than push/pull. Snooze would be nice, but hard to see how to work it in and retain the original styling of this vintage-look clock...Read more By Tucker Mac "Tucker Mac" (Omaha, NE) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Big Ben 1931 Quartz Alarm Black Dial (Kitchen) Beautifully made. Heavy. Has a progressive alarm that starts off softly so it doesn't wake everybody in the house. Has run for a year one 1 battery. Very easy to use. By Cate "Cate" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Big Ben 1931 Quartz Alarm Black Dial (Kitchen) This is a nice retro type clock. It keeps good time, and the alarm works well. I remember my grandparents had a clock like this, so that's one reason I purchased it. I like the analogue better than the digital, so this is perfect for me. I wish it had a "snooze" feature though. That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. |
