Although this alarm clock looks old fashioned, you don't have to remember to wind it and the bells don't really ring. Thanks to one C battery (not included), the modern quartz movement keeps the clock running smoothly and accurately, and the alarm beeps without jarring. The oversized white dial shows Arabic numerals, a second hand, and the alarm setting in the very center. The hands are configured in Big Ben's distinctive "spade and dagger" shape. Westclox started producing Big Ben clocks in 1909, and today they are beloved American classics. The Twin Bell model is based on an interpretation of the original 1921 design, with a brushed pewter finish for a retro look. Summary: Excitement turns to Sadness 2007-12-01
Comment: I was initially happy that I had found this classic clock. I always keep a wind up clock next to my alarm and use it anytime the weather indicates the possibility of high winds or inclement weather so I know I have a working alarm clock. The generous size and strength of the bells was certain to wake me. Unfortunately, when it arrived, the hour hand was broken and would not keep time. I looked at it to see if I could fix it but it was sealed and I could not see the inner workings. I contacted the shipper via Amazon and let them know of the condition it arrived in. They were accommodating and processed a refund in a timely fashion. I was disappointed that I could not get a replacement clock and my only option was a refund, but they were timely in that. In the future I will continue to look for a similar clock, but that will be another review

Comment: Why 3 stars? I'll complain first, then praise after.
While the name describes it perfectly I was quite surprised when this clock arrived. It is absolutely huge. So much so that everyone that has seen the clock has laughed and asked why did I buy such a big clock. This will not fit comfortably on my night-stand. While it weighs next to nothing it just is too awkward next to my lamp on the stand.
Even if size wasn't a factor you would not want this next to your bed due to the alarm. IT IS LOUD! The product description is wrong. It is not a beep at all, but rings the two large bells at the top of the clock. I joke that when it goes off other people in my building are getting dressed and leaving thinking that it is a fire alarm.
With those two things said, this is a great alarm for people like me that have a hard time getting up and are addicted to snooze. First, you will not be able to sleep through this alarm. Second, because I had to place this enormous clock across the room, I now get out of bed to turn it off. Third, there is no snooze. Turn it off and go back to bed and suffer the consequences. You only do that once or twice. After that it's learn to wake up on the first ring.
So overall I am quite happy with this "Big Ben". It wasn't what I expected, but it does the job and then some.

Comment: Very happy with this purchase. Sturdy construction and works
well. Standard "C" battery powers the clock, eliminating the
need to wind-up daily. At first a little confused with the
operation of the alarm, but very simple to operate. Good buy.
Would recommend.
